Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, with the highest risk concentrated in September and October. That is not new, and it has never stopped Jamaica trading through the summer. What has changed since Melissa is that clients now ask about it directly, which is a good thing.
Here is how we handle it.
We tell you plainly which weeks carry the most risk. September and early October are the peak, and they are also when the rates are at their lowest. That trade-off is yours to make, and we would rather you made it knowingly.
We check what the supplier's policy actually says about weather disruption before you commit, and we put it in writing on your quote. Policies differ enormously between hotel groups.
We raise travel insurance for any trip in the window. Not because we sell it as a matter of course, but because a policy that covers trip interruption is worth considerably more in September than in February.
And if a storm does form, you have a person to call rather than a queue to join. That is most of what you are paying an advisory for.
